CASE STUDIES

Frac Plug Composite Lower Slips
For this downhole application, this customer requested development of a composite lower slip that could withstand the high loads yet still drill out as easily as the rest of the composite plug. The slips were required to resist the high loads at a temperature as high as 300 degrees F. We used compression molded slip “petals” using a short 2” glass fiber with phenolic resin. The slips are held together on the plug using two thin filament wound rings.
Megalex™ Composite Sucker Rods
Our customer wanted to invent a sucker rod that was dramatically lighter, stronger, and more corrosion resistant than the steel or fiberglass rods in use today. Carbon fiber was an obvious candidate material due to its much lower density and high strength and stiffness. The challenge was devising a fitting that allows the carbon rods to be easily connected to form a long chain of rods. The fitting had to be as strong as the carbon rods and slender in shape to fit in the tube of the well.
